INITIAL RELEASE, Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Today at approximately 1:15 p.m., Massachusetts state troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that had been struck by a wheel on Route 95 northbound near Exit 31 in Lexington. Responding troopers quickly determined that the wheel had come loose from a pickup truck that was traveling on the other side of the highway and crossed the median, striking the northbound car and causing the fatality of the northbound driver.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brian Williams indicates that the 1997 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling southbound when its left rear wheel came off the rear axle. The wheel flew over the Jersey barrier median, bounced off one northbound vehicle, and then struck a second northbound vehicle, a sedan operated by an adult male. That male driver of the sedan was determined by first responders to be deceased at the scene. The tire impacted that vehicle in the area of the windshield and roof. The disabled Dodge Ram came to a stop in the southbound left lane, just south of Exit 31.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the Ram was being operated by a 19-year-old woman. No further information about occupants of either vehicle, including the identity of the victim, are being released at this time.

This crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. No charges have been filed at this time; the ongoing investigation will determine if charges are warranted. State Police were also assisted on scene by Lexington Fire and EMS as well as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Southbound lanes are now open. Northbound lanes remain closed but should be reopened shortly.

Please do not contact the barracks for media inquiries. More information will be released at an appropriate time.
