Massachusetts State Police Media Release –12182016 – State Police Investigate Serious Injury Crash in Tyngsborough
This evening at approximately 7:18 p.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Andover responded to reports of a serious crash on Route 3 Southbound, just prior to Exit 35 in Tyngsborough, involving two passenger vehicles and a highway sanding truck.
Upon arrival, troopers discovered that a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander, for reasons still under investigation, collided with a 2009 Honda Accord, then the Mitsubishi struck a 1987 Volvo truck that was treating the roadway, sub-contracted by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).
The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 28-year-old female from Lowell, was found to have serious injuries. She was subsequently transported to Lowell General Hospital. The driver of the truck, a independent subcontractor to MassDOT, who is a 54-year-old man from Chelmsford, and the driver of the Honda Accord, a 21-year-old man from Georgetown, was not injured.
The right lane on Route 3 Southbound was closed at the time of the crash. The scene was cleared and all lanes were open for travel at approximately 9:10 p.m.
The remaining facts and circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation by troopers from the Andover Barracks. Troop A Headquarters, State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES), Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT), and Tyngsborough Fire & EMS, all assisted on scene.
