State Police are investigating a crash in which a male pedestrian was struck by a suspected stolen Jeep in Somerville this afternoon.

At approximately 3:30 pm a trooper queried the Jeep’s license plate while it was on Mystic Avenue and determined the vehicle was stolen. The trooper called in the stolen vehicle to his barracks and also notified Somerville police. As other state and local cruisers began responding to the area, the occupants of the Jeep noticed one of them and sped off.

The trooper who initially spotted the stolen vehicle began following in the direction in which it fled.

While fleeing after spotting the cruisers, the stolen Jeep turned into Lombardi Way, part of the ramp complex between Route 38 and Mystic Avenue, under a Route 93. Preliminary investigation indicates the Jeep went off the road, into the median between the opposite lanes, and struck a male pedestrian who was walking in the median.

The occupants of the Jeep abandoned the vehicle and ran off. Both were apprehended quickly.

The operator, an 18-year-old male from Arlington, is being booked at the Medford Barracks on charges related to the stolen vehicle and the crash.

The passenger, a teenage juvenile female, is also at the barracks. The ongoing investigation will determine whether she will be charged as well.

The male pedestrian was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he is currently receiving emergency treatment for injuries believed to be serious but not life-threatening.

Preliminary reports suggest that troopers were never in active pursuit of the stolen Jeep, but per routine policy of the State Police, the investigation remains ongoing to determine all the facts related to the incident.

The is being conducted by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

No further information is being released at this time.
