State Police Investigating Bicycle Fatal at Brookline Avenue and Park Drive in Boston

February 15, 2019 – At about 1:45 p.m. this afternoon, State Police from the Boston Barracks responded to a crash involving a bicyclist and a cement truck on Brookline Avenue and Park Drive in Boston. The crash resulted in the death of the bicyclist, a Cambridge woman.

Trooper Keith Deshler, who was working a road detail nearby, was the first to respond the crash at the intersection of Brookline Avenue and Park Drive. Preliminary investigation by Trooper Steven Valair, the investigating officer, indicates that the cement truck was stopped at a traffic light on Brookline Avenue. When the light turned green the truck started to move forward.

The bicyclist, Paula Sharaga, a 69, of Cambridge, was riding in the intersection and came into contact with the front end of the truck. The sequence of events leading up the collision remain under investigation.

When Trooper Deshler reached Sharaga he found two civilians performing CPR on her.  He requested an ambulance. A third civilian approached and identified himself as a trauma physician and requested a ventilation bag, which Trooper Deshler was able to provide from his medical kit, and used it in an attempt to administer aid. Sharaga was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital by Boston EMS. She was pronounced deceased.

The operator of the Cement truck, a 67-year-old Salem man, was transported to Beth Israel Hospital.

This crash remains under investigation by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County.  No charges have been filed at this time.
