State Police arrest Chelsea man for OUI following serious head-on crash in Medford

A serious crash on the Mystic Valley Parkway in Medford today sent five people to the hospital for treatment and one man under arrest for operating under the influence.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Caggiano indicates that at about 6:05 p.m., HELSER MSARAVIA, 22, of Chelsea was traveling southbound on Mystic Valley Parkway near Pine Ridge Road in Medford in a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta when he traveled into the northbound travel lane and struck a 2012 BMW X3 SUV head-on.

The driver of the BMW, a 35-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 39-year-old man, both from Medford, were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  MSARAVIA sustained minor injuries while two passengers in his vehicle, a 20-year-old female and a 16-year-old juvenile, sustained serious injuries.  All were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

MSARAVIA was placed under arrest and charged with the following offenses:

  1. Operating under the influence of liquor
  2. Negligent operation
  3. Unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle
  4. Marked lanes violation

Bail was set at $20,000.00 and MSARAVIA’s will be arraigned when he is medically cleared.

This crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section.
