Last night, August 3, at approximately 11:02 p.m., Troopers from State Police-Athol responded to a crash caused by a wrong-way driver on Route 2 in Phillipston that resulted in fatalities of the wrong-way operator and the operator in the vehicle struck.

Shortly before 11:00 p.m. State Police-Athol received calls about a wrong-way driver going west on the eastbound side of Route 2. Minutes later the Barracks received reports of a head-on collision on the eastbound side, west of Exit 79 in Phillipston. Route 2 reduces from a divided highway to an undivided highway with a single lane in each direction in that area.

At this time, investigation suggests the 2014 Chevy Sonic was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and struck the 2018 Ford Escape, traveling eastbound, head-on.

The operator of the Chevy, Alysha Rentas, 24 of Athol was determined to be deceased at the scene. The Ford left the roadway, going over the guardrail and down an embankment 20-30 feet, hitting a tree, and becoming engulfed in fire. The operator of the Ford, Michael Barrett, 26, of Westford was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The crash investigation is ongoing by Troopers from the Athol Barracks. Troop B Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), Worcester County Detectives; Athol, Gardner and Templeton Fire, police and EMS, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT), and the Office of Medical Examiner all assisted on scene. No further information is currently available.  Please do not contact the barracks directly.

All lanes were shut down as a result of the crash and investigation. They reopened around 4:30 a.m.
