Coordinated enforcement initiative targeted dangerous driving aimed at roadway safety

FRAMINGHAM – The Massachusetts State Police today announced the results of Operation Wicked Safe, a coordinated regional enforcement initiative targeting dangerous and distracted driving on major roadways across the Northeast. In the October 13-15th operation, State Police agencies from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont combined to make 36 OUI arrests and issue more than 2,000 speeding violations along with nearly 6,000 overall traffic citations.

Across the Commonwealth, Field Troopers with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing conducted a total of 3,714 motor vehicle stops, issuing more than 1,900 citations for speeding, distracted driving and other violations, while making 16 OUI arrests. The citations included 418 violations of the state’s hands-free law, 130 seat belt violations, and 253 move-over law violations. These are some of the most common issues seen on our roadways, often leading to crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities. This operation doubled enforcement activity across Massachusetts compared to the same period a year ago and aimed to educate the public about the dangers and consequences of these driving behaviors.

The Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES) inspected 577 trucks and commercial vehicles and found more than 1,300 serious violations, including suspended operators, false logbooks, driving without a CDL license, operating without an ignition interlock device, controlled substances in a commercial motor vehicle, and brakes out of adjustment. The CVES unit also made three arrests and issued more than 72,000 fines. Getting dangerous drivers and hazardous commercial vehicles off our roadways helps to ensure each of us gets to our destination safely.

“Keeping people safe on our roads is a fundamental part of our public safety mission, and Operation Wicked Safe reflects the Massachusetts State Police’s commitment to that work,” Public Safety and Security Secretary Gina Kwon said. “The Department’s comprehensive approach to roadway safety, public education, enforcement, and strong partnerships reflects the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s unwavering focus on keeping communities safe.”

“Operation Wicked Safe sent a clear message that dangerous and distracted driving will not be tolerated on our roadways,” said Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble. “Our Troopers see firsthand the risks created by excessive speed, distraction, impairment and reckless behavior. By coordinating our efforts with five neighboring agencies, we expanded our enforcement presence across state lines and reinforced our shared commitment to protecting everyone who travels our roads. While this operation focused on select dates, the State Police will continue to hold dangerous drivers accountable every day of the year.”

The five other participating agencies conducted enforcement in their respective jurisdictions, totaling approximately 2,000 traffic citations, 80 distracted violations, more than 900 speeding tickets and 20 OUI arrests.

Operation Wicked Safe saw targeted enforcement on Interstates 90, 91, 84, 93, 95 and 395, Route 146, and other priority roadways in cross-border areas. The initiative was developed in response to a trend of dangerous driving behaviors, resulting in crashes which peaked in October with the influx of seasonal tourism, school routines, as well as changing weather and road conditions. In October of 2025 alone, the Massachusetts State Police recorded more than 4,000 calls for service related to crashes and MassDOT recorded 38 fatal crashes – making it the deadliest month of the year.
