UPDATE--ID of South Boston Crash Victim; Investigation is Ongoing

UPDATE—The victim who died in this crash is identified as Fernando R. Pizarro, 57. Mr. Pizarro previously had resided at a Boston homeless shelter. The investigation to date indicates that, immediately prior to the crash, he was moving in and around stopped vehicles in his wheelchair at the intersection of Traveler Street and Frontage Road. Mr. Pizarro was in front of the concrete truck as traffic began to move and was struck by it.

 

The driver of the truck and Boston Sand and Gravel representatives have been cooperative with investigators. The truck was towed to a State Police facility where it will be examined by Troopers from the MSP’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.  Troopers thus far have found no evidence suggesting impairment or distraction on the driver’s part. Per federal Department of Transportation regulations, the driver was screened for alcohol or drug use.

 

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

INITIAL RELEASE--Tuesday, April 2, 2024


At approximately 10 AM today (Tuesday, April 2, 2024) Massachusetts State Police responded to a crash involving a cement truck and a pedestrian in a wheelchair in the area of Frontage Road and Traveler Street in South Boston. The pedestrian, a 57-year-old Boston man, was determined to be deceased on-scene.


The 2020 Mack Granite cement truck involved in the crash is owned by Boston Sand and Gravel. At the time of the crash it was operated by a 53-year-old Medford man. The truck operator was transported by Boston EMS to a Boston hospital with possible minor injuries. The scene was cleared at approximately 12:40 PM.


The deceased victim's name is not being released at this time pending location of next-of-kin.


The investigation into the crash is active and is being conducted by Troopers from the State Police-Tunnels Barracks, State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County, Troop H Detectives, and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section. No charges have been sought as of this time.
