In the 351 cities and towns, Massachusetts State Troopers use their training and skill to navigate a variety of circumstances that often present significant danger to themselves and others. In an effort to raise greater awareness of their work, the Department periodically shares incident summaries.
Each summary reflects a small portion of the Department’s work to strengthen public safety, collaborate with our partners, and build positive relationships in the communities we serve.
For the integrity of ongoing criminal cases and in the interest of each subject’s privacy, we have removed personally identifying information from the narratives as well as information not subject to public disclosure. All criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
State Police Organize Community Blood Drive
Members of the Community Action Team sponsored a Blood Drive and Coffee with a Cop in partnership with Mike Shea’s Coffee in Bridgewater. Massachusetts General Hospital brought one of their state-of-the-art Bloodmobiles which is a 40-foot self-contained and self-supporting bus designed to make the donation process smooth. More than 40 people came down to donate blood.
Troopers Borrow Bicycle in Foot Chase on the Beach
Troopers from the Medford Barracks responded to a noise complaint on Constitution Beach in East Boston.
Once on scene, Troopers saw a moped illegally parked on a pathway with a man sitting nearby consuming alcohol. In conversation, the man told Troopers he would not be able to operate his moped because he was intoxicated and unlicensed.
When the man subsequently fled on foot, Troopers initiated a foot pursuit. When the suspect appeared to be gaining distance from Troopers, a beach patron allowed them to use their bicycle to catch up to and apprehend the suspect.
Police Respond to Domestic Conflict with a Deadly Weapon
Troopers from the Springfield Barracks responded to a report of a violent struggle inside a car pulled over on Interstate 391 South.
Upon arrival, Troopers located a male driver and female passenger.
The victim said he was her boyfriend and showed Troopers cut marks on her wrist and finger. She said the man cut her with a knife that he subsequently hid in the back of the vehicle.
When Troopers attempted to place the man in handcuffs, he turned away and ran across the highway onto oncoming traffic. Troopers tackled him and moved him into the breakdown lane for his own safety.
Troopers found the knife and observed marks and holes in the back of the passenger seat. The victim told Police that the suspect stabbed the seat during their argument and threatened to stab her as well.
State Police charged the man with several assault and battery offenses, and he was held on $15,000 bail.
Troopers Capture Fleeing Car Jackers
Troopers from the Westfield Barracks attempted to stop a Chevrolet pickup truck in Blandford for speeding.
The vehicle initially pulled over, but as Troopers approached, it fled.
Troopers pursued the vehicle and successfully deployed stop sticks on Interstate 90 west. The truck continued to flee despite having a tire blown out.
The vehicle eventually entered a grassy median to avoid more tire deflation devices, reversed direction, and started heading east on Interstate 90. When it crashed into a ditch, both occupants fled the vehicle on foot.
Troopers arrested the two occupants and transported to the Barracks for booking. Troopers discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen from Harvard, Massachusetts and both parties were wanted for a carjacking in Worcester County.
Multi-State Pursuit Leads to Two Arrests in Worcester
Shortly after 7 p.m., State Police monitored a pursuit of a black Mazda by Woonsocket Police (Rhode Island) on Interstate 495 north approaching Bellingham.
Police identified the vehicle’s two occupants as a woman and man. The man was known to police, wanted in connection to a Rhode Island shooting, and believed to be armed with a firearm.
A short time later, Massachusetts State Police assumed control of the pursuit. State Police deployed the Air Wing to assist Troopers on the ground as the Mazda continued to evade police traveling more than 100 MPH on Interstates 495 and 290.
The Mazda eventually exited Interstate 290 into Downtown Worcester at which point Troopers terminated their pursuit. Woonsocket Police continues until the Mazda stoped on Columbia Street in Worcester. Both occupants fled on foot.
State, Worcester, and Woonsocket Police located the female occupant and placed her in custody. The male occupant ran into a residence on Fox Street and appeared on a third floor deck.
Police used their training the skill to de-escalate and talk the man down from the porch to surrender. During the arrest police discovered a large amount of narcotics on his person.
Boating Crash Leads to Two Operating Under the Influence Arrests
Troopers from the Oak Bluffs Barracks assisted local police in responding to a boat in the Harbor that struck an inflatable dingy boat.
The crash resulted in a woman being thrown from the inflatable and suffering serious injuries. Troopers and Officers rescued the victim from the water, rendered aid, and facilitated transport to a local hospital.
During their investigation, Troopers determined the operators of both boats were intoxicated and placed them under arrest.
Troopers and Firefighters Rescue Victim Trapped in Underwater Vehicle
State Police Milton dispatched nearby Troopers to a motor vehicle rollover in Milton – both from Field Services and the K-9 Unit.
Troopers arrived on scene alongside members of Milton Fire Department. First responders found a motor vehicle overturned and submerged in the water. Without regard for their personal safety, a Trooper and Firefighter entered the water to rescue anyone who may have been trapped in the vehicle.
With one person trapped in the vehicle, the Trooper successfully used a Halligan tool to break the front passenger window and began to cut the air bag to free them. Firefighters successfully opened the door and freed the victim and delivered them to medical care on shore.
