Speed and Aggressive Driving Initiative (Week Ending 7/3/26) 

The Massachusetts State Police were involved in a Speed and Aggressive Driving Initiative aimed at cracking down on dangerous driving habits.  The initiative incorporated 184 Troopers from across the Commonwealth.  The initiative resulted in 2 OUI arrests, 8 other arrests, and 387 warnings.   There were 1,789 citations issued; 1,158 of those were for speeding.  161 hand-held device violations were written, and 79 seatbelt violations.   

Trooper Intervention with Person in Crisis 

On 06/25/2026, a Trooper from the Shelburne Falls Barracks, while commuting to her overnight shift, heard a radio broadcast stating Montague PD were requesting assistance for a distraught male on the Gill-Montague Bridge. The Trooper was the first to arrive on scene. Upon arrival, she observed the individual partially over the bridge railing. The Trooper approached him and engaged him in conversation, successfully encouraging him to return to a safe side of the railing. She continued speaking with the individual and providing support until Montague PD arrived and assumed care. 

Arrest of Impaired Driver Following Assault on Troopers 

On 06/27/2026, a Trooper from the Brookfield Barracks conducted a motor vehicle stop for observed traffic violations in Worcester. Following an investigation, including the administration of standardized field sobriety tests, the operator was determined to be operating under the influence of alcohol. As the Trooper attempted to place the individual under arrest, the individual actively resisted, biting and headbutting the Trooper before being secured in a cruiser.  

While in the cruiser, the individual kicked and shattered a rear door window before attempting to climb through the opening to escape. As Troopers and Officers from Worcester PD worked to regain control, the individual struck a Trooper in the head with a pair of handcuffs, causing a laceration that required stitches. The individual was ultimately taken into custody and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest, among other related offenses.     

Traffic Stop Leads to Recovery of Stolen Firearm  

On 06/30/2026, a Trooper from the South Boston Barracks conducted a motor vehicle stop for observed traffic violations. During the stop, it was determined that the operator’s driver’s license was suspended. The operator was issued a lawful exit order. As he exited the vehicle, Troopers observed a pocketknife on his person. While a Trooper was securing the knife, the operator fled toward the sidewalk on foot.  

Troopers pursued the operator and quickly caught up to him. A physical struggle ensued as the operator actively resisted arrest by fighting with Troopers and Officers from Boston PD who arrived on scene to assist. During the struggle, Troopers observed a firearm fall from the operator’s person onto the ground. Troopers ultimately gained control of the operator and placed him into custody.  

The firearm that was recovered was determined to be stolen. It was loaded with a high-capacity magazine, with two additional loaded magazines also discovered. The operator also did not possess a License to Carry Firearms.  

Search and Recovery Effort for Missing Juvenile  

On 06/30/2026, multiple local agencies along with MSP K9, Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), Airwing and Troopers from the Sturbridge Barracks assisted Monson PD in the search for a missing 15-year-old non-verbal juvenile.  

The coordinated search effort extended across state lines and involved collaboration among participating agencies to locate the juvenile. After approximately 28 hours of searching, the juvenile was located alive and well in Connecticut and later safely reunited with his loved ones.
