Lawrence, MA – In a coordinated effort to improve public safety and quality of life, the Lawrence Police Department working alongside the Massachusetts State Police, Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Methuen Police Department, Andover Police Department, and North Andover Police Department recently conducted a targeted enforcement operation to address the reckless use of recreational vehicles across the city.

The initiative focused on curbing the illegal operation of dirt bikes, mopeds, and ATVs, which continue to pose a significant risk to both residents and motorists.

After an incident in Boston where hundreds of recreational vehicles illegally traveled in and out of the downtown highway tunnels, the Lawrence Police Department's Traffic Unit received information indicating similar activity would occur on Saturday, August 30th.

Law enforcement resources mobilized across city limits and key perimeter points. These proactive measures prevented the group from congregating for the planned “takeover” and helped maintain order and public safety.

Results of the operation included:

40 citations issued for various motor vehicle violations

8 recreational vehicles (including dirt bikes, mopeds, and four-wheelers) towed

5 individuals arrested for offenses such as reckless operation, unlicensed operation, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, and outstanding warrants

1 suspect from Fitchburg, MA—who had previously fled from officers in Lawrence—was apprehended in Harvard, MA by the Massachusetts State Police

2 individuals issued court summonses by the Massachusetts State Police

Lawrence Police Chief Maurice Aguiler said:

“This joint operation underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies across our region to protect public safety and enhance the quality of life for Lawrence residents. By combining our resources and working collaboratively, we are sending a clear message: reckless and illegal vehicle operation will not be tolerated.”

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent, Colonel Geoffrey Noble said: “As an agency committed to enhancing community safety and quality of life, the Massachusetts State Police shares the resolve of the Lawrence Police Department and our partners to address the complex public safety challenge of recreational vehicles. I commend the Troopers assigned to the Community Action Team, the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and the Air Wing who contributed their unique skill to this operation. The State Police will do everything we can to support our local partners and make positive impact in the communities we serve.”

The reckless operation of off-road vehicles including dirt bikes, ATVs, and mopeds is a widespread issue impacting cities and communities nationwide. Targeted enforcement operations like this are critical in addressing the immediate problem.

The Lawrence Police Department extends its sincere gratitude to all partner agencies for their collaboration, professionalism, and shared dedication to public safety during this successful operation.
