In the 351 cities and towns, Massachusetts State Troopers use their training and skill to navigate a variety of circumstances that often present significant danger to themselves and others. In an effort to raise greater awareness of their work, the Department periodically shares incident summaries.
Each summary represents a small portion of the Department’s work to enhance public safety, collaborate with our partners, and foster positive relationships within the communities we serve.
For the integrity of ongoing criminal cases and in the interest of each subject’s privacy, we have removed personally identifying information from the narratives as well as information not subject to public disclosure. All criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Driver Suspended in Two States Charged with Possession
A Trooper from the Andover Barracks was patrolling I-495 in Andover when he noticed the vehicle traveling in front of him had an expired Maine registration. After speaking with the driver, the Trooper learned he was suspended in both Maine and Massachusetts and there was a warrant for his arrest. While the Trooper was removing him from the vehicle, he noticed a fanny pack behind the driver’s seat. The fanny pack was previously located on the seat next to the driver. The Trooper opened the bag and found a spoon with burnt white residue on it. Also inside the car was multiple jars containing marijuana, 11 boxes of a yellow liquid concentrate, and a large sum of cash. The driver was charged with possession with intent to distribute and motor vehicle violations.
Multiple Units Assist with Locating Parental Kidnapping
Troopers from the Lee barracks assisted Stockbridge Police with a parental kidnapping where the mother refused to turn the child over to the legal caregiver. The mother fled into a wooded area with the child. The patrols were assisted by SERT, K-9, and the airwing. They were unable to locate the pair until the following day. The mother refused to cooperate, so Troopers on scene began a negotiation to convince the mother to release the child. A crisis negotiation team was contacted to assist, but the mother complied before they arrived on scene. Both mother and child were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
Dog Rescued from Storm Drain
Troopers from the Springfield Barracks were called to the scene of a car fire on I-91. According to the operator, she attempted to light a cigarette while applying hairspray and it got out of hand. Troopers were able to get everyone out of the vehicle and the operator was transported to the hospital for minor injuries. While the fire department was checking storm drains for contaminants, they discovered a dog inside a caved-in drain culvert. Troopers and firefighters worked together to rescue the dog. The local animal control responded and quickly identified the dog as “Ally” who was missing for over 30 days. Ally was happily reunited with her owners.

Driver Arrested for Possession After Being Stopped Twice for Speeding
A Trooper from the Charlton Barracks was monitoring traffic on the Pike when he noticed a dark grey SUV traveling at a high rate of speed. The Trooper realized he had previously stopped the same vehicle for speeding about 30 minutes prior. After pulling the vehicle over and speaking to the operator, the Trooper noticed the operator’s phone was in his lap and covered with a white powder. The operator agreed to perform SFSTs and submit to a drug test. The test came back positive for cocaine and the operator was arrested. A search of the car revealed multiple small bags of a white powder and one vial of purple powder.
Over 100 Grams of Fentanyl Recovered from Sock in Car Door
A Trooper was patrolling Cranberry Hwy in Wareham when he noticed a vehicle with heavy front-end damage. A CJIS inquiry revealed the vehicle did not have a valid inspection sticker. The Trooper initiated a motor vehicle stop and requested the driver’s license and registration. The driver did not speak English and attempted to show the Trooper a picture of a Dominican license on his phone. Since he was unable to produce a valid license, the driver was arrested. The Trooper noticed a black sock that was stuffed under the armrest in the driver’s side door. Upon removing the sock, the Trooper observed numerous knotted baggies containing a tan powder. The driver was charged with numerous motor vehicle and narcotics violations.
Passenger Arrested for Trafficking Drugs in Pants
While on patrol in the city of Taunton, a Trooper assigned to the Middleborough Barracks noticed a car pass him that had no front license plate. After stopping the vehicle, the Trooper observed the passenger attempting to hide or retrieve something out of his pants. Troopers removed both occupants from the vehicle and frisked them for weapons. They recovered a large sum of money from the driver’s pocket. Multiple knives and a digital scale with white powder were found in a fanny pack that was located in the center console. While the passenger was detained in the cruiser, Troopers noticed him moving around. Upon removing him from the cruiser, white powder was visible in the prisoner compartment and on the passenger’s clothes. Troopers recovered approximately 45 grams of suspected cocaine from the passenger’s pants.
