Weekly Summary of Police Activity
In the 351 cities and towns, Massachusetts State Troopers use their training and skill to navigate a variety of circumstances that often present significant danger to themselves and others. In an effort to raise greater awareness of their work, the Department periodically shares incident summaries.
Each summary represents a small portion of the Department’s work to enhance public safety, collaborate with our partners, and foster positive relationships within the communities we serve.
For the integrity of ongoing criminal cases and in the interest of each subject’s privacy, we have removed personally identifying information from the narratives as well as information not subject to public disclosure. All criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Troopers Arrest Man After Road Rage Incident
The Andover Barracks received a call from a motorist on Route 3 South in Tyngsborough who reported another motorist pointed a firearm at him after he honked his horn. When Troopers ran the plate from the suspect’s truck, they were alerted to an NCIC hit identifying the owner as a “violent person” with a record of being extremely volatile towards law enforcement. A Trooper from the Truck Team overheard the broadcast and took up a position further south on Rt. 3 hoping to catch the vehicle. Within a short period of time, he spotted the truck and performed a felony stop with another Trooper. The driver was detained while Troopers searched the truck, where they discovered two pistol style firearms next to the driver’s seat. The driver was charged accordingly.
Uber Driver Arrested for OUI and Multiple Firearm Offenses
A Trooper from the Andover Barracks was dispatched to a call concerning an erratic vehicle on I-93 South in Wilmington. A witness reported seeing the vehicle swerving in and out of lanes. The Trooper found the vehicle and observed it nearly sideswipe a bus. After stopping the vehicle and administering SFSTs, the driver was found to be intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested and stated he was an Uber driver on his way to pick up a passenger. Before towing the vehicle, Troopers performed an inventory and found a loaded 9mm handgun with four 10-round magazines and one 18-round magazine.
Man Charged with OUI 3rd Offense After Marked Lane Violations
While on patrol on Route 1 in Saugus, a Trooper noticed a black Audi sedan make multiple marked lane violations. The Trooper made contact with the operator, who asked why he was being stopped multiple times. The Trooper ordered the driver out of the car, but he refused. After calling for backup, the driver was escorted out of his car and secured in the back of the cruiser. Prior to towing the car, Troopers performed an inventory of the vehicle where they found a small plastic baggie containing white powder. The man was subsequently charged with narcotics violations and OUI 3rd offense.
114 Grams of Cocaine Found in Disabled Jeep
A Trooper from the Shelbourne Falls barracks was dispatched to a report of a Jeep with its hood up on I-91 in Greenfield. Upon arriving on scene, the Trooper requested the driver and passenger to identify themselves. The operator of the Jeep was found to have a suspended license, the passenger was initially reluctant to identify himself, and the registered owner of the vehicle was found to have an active warrant for his arrest. The passenger was eventually identified and, while not the registered owner, had only a suspended license, thus a tow was requested. During the course of the inventory, approximately 114 grams of suspected cocaine were located in a box behind the driver's sea. Both operator and passenger arrested.
Fleeing Suspect Throws Fanny Pack onto Roof During Pursuit
Troopers from the Springfield barracks stopped a car for an unreadable plate and learned the driver was suspended and all three passengers were not wearing seatbelts. After identifying the occupants, it was discovered that one of the passengers had an active warrant. As the Troopers were taking that passenger into custody, the individual who was sitting in the front passenger seat suddenly took off on foot. Troopers, assisted by Springfield Police, initiated a foot pursuit. During the pursuit, one of the Troopers witnessed the individual take off a shoulder bag and throw it onto the roof of a KFC. Eventually, the fleeing individual was caught, and the shoulder bag was recovered. Inside the bag was a Glock 9mm handgun with a 15-round magazine, 43 small wax baggies containing a purple powder, and one larger baggie also containing purple powder. The individual who owned the bag did not have an active LTC and was charged with firearm and narcotic violations.
Tractor Trailer Rollover Leads to Possession Arrest
During a period of heavy rain, Troopers from the Belchertown Barracks were dispatched to a report of a tractor trailer rollover. Witnesses stated the truck did not stop at the stop sign, continued straight through the intersection and guardrail before coming to rest on its side in a ditch. While Troopers were speaking to the operator, who was being evaluated by EMS, an Amherst firefighter alerted them to a firearm that he recovered from the operator’s person. Troopers requested the operator’s wallet to verify he had a valid LTC and located a small glassine baggie containing a white powder. The driver confirmed the substance was cocaine. While at the hospital with the operator, the Troopers were notified by a member of the truck team that the tractor trailer was improperly registered and had faulty brakes. The operator was subsequently arrested for possession of cocaine and numerous motor and commercial vehicle violations.
Firearm Recovered from Vehicle After Crash
Troopers from the Tunnels Barracks responded to a two-car crash on Rt. 93 North by exit 16. One of the Troopers observed the driver of one of the involved vehicles appeared heavily intoxicated. The operator failed the field sobriety test and was taken into custody. An inventory of the vehicle was performed, and Troopers found a Glock 9mm tucked between the driver’s seat and center console. Once at the barracks, the operator agreed to a breath test and blew nearly three times the legal limit. The operator’s LTC will be revoked in addition to being charged with OUI.
