In the 351 cities and towns, Massachusetts State Troopers use their training and skill to navigate a variety of circumstances that often present significant danger to themselves and others. In an effort to raise greater awareness of their work, the Department periodically shares incident summaries.

Each summary represents a small portion of the Department’s work to enhance public safety, collaborate with our partners, and foster positive relationships within the communities we serve.

For the integrity of ongoing criminal cases and in the interest of each subject’s privacy, we have removed personally identifying information from the narratives as well as information not subject to public disclosure. All criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Foot Pursuit Ends at Dunkin’ Donuts Drive Through

A Trooper from the Revere Barracks was on patrol when he observed a white Honda Accord fail to yield at a rotary. The Trooper initiated a traffic stop and requested the driver’s identification and registration, but he fled on foot. The suspect ran in and around the area of a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts.

A passerby witnessed the ongoing pursuit and attempted to grab the suspect at the entrance of the drive through. The Trooper tackled the suspect and they continued to resist arrest. Backup arrived moments later and the suspect was eventually subdued and taken into custody for motor vehicle violations and resisting arrest.

Vehicle Flees from Trooper and Crashes into Fence at Barracks

While on patrol in Chicopee, a Trooper from the Springfield Barracks located a vehicle involved in a shoplifting incident in Hadley earlier that day. The Trooper observed the vehicle drive over several curbs and the grass outside a local business in an attempt to evade him.

The vehicle subsequently traveled on to Interstate 291 before taking exit 3. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle crashed into the guardrail and fence in front of the Springfield Barracks. Three subjects were taken into custody and during an inventory of the vehicle, numerous wax folds containing suspected heroin were recovered.

Gun Recovered After Stop for Window Tint

A Trooper from the Springfield Barracks stopped a vehicle for window tint violations when he noticed the driver acting unusually. The driver gave conflicting stories about his destination. Additionally, the Trooper observed an abnormal amount of air fresheners, which is a tactic commonly used by criminals in an attempt to mask the odor of narcotics from K-9s.

The Trooper removed the operator from the vehicle and called for a K-9 sniff. The K-9 alerted to a bag in the backseat of the vehicle, where Troopers found a plethora of narcotics. In the glovebox, the Troopers located a M+P .40 caliber with seven rounds and a defaced serial number.

As the Troopers were handcuffing the operator, the attempted to flee, but was apprehended a short distance away. Troopers also located  a spring-loaded double-edged knife in his pocket.

Man Charged with OUI 3rd Offense

While patrolling in Worcester, a white Toyota Rav4 swerved in front of a Trooper’s cruiser without using its blinker. The Trooper activated her lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

Approximately 30 seconds later, the vehicle came to a stop and the Trooper approached the passenger side to speak with the operator. Immediately the Trooper noticed a strong odor of alcohol. The operator said he was coming from a bar, consumed about 4 to 5 drinks and admitted that he “probably had too much”. After failing sobriety testing, the operator was taken into custody and charged with OUI Alcohol 3rd offense.

Stolen Car with Drugs Recovered

A Trooper on patrol on Interstate 84 in Sturbridge when a vehicle he queried came back as stolen from New York.

The Trooper contacted another Trooper who had a cruiser equipped with StarChase. He was able to get behind the stolen vehicle and successfully deployed a GPS tracker. The vehicle stopped a short time later.

When asked about the stolen status, the driver said it was his brother's car, and he had reported it stolen because his other brother had taken it, but it had since been returned. The owner failed to inform the NYPD that it was returned. A phone call to the owner confirmed his story.

While speaking with the owner, Troopers inventoried the vehicle and discovered a large amount of green leafy substance in the trunk area in a black and green grocery bag and 13 rolled joints. When asked, both the driver and the passenger stated they did not know the weed was in the vehicle. They were both arrested and transported to the Sturbridge barracks for booking.

Woman Caught Preparing Heroin in Car

A Trooper patrolling Interstate 290 in Marlboro observed a motor vehicle in the breakdown lane with its hazard lights flashing. He pulled over to assist what he thought was a disabled motor vehicle and observed the sole female operator leaning over to her right.

The Trooper saw an open box on the center console area with plastic bags, pieces of cotton and a large black spoon. The Trooper subsequently observed the woman actively pouring some off-white powder substance onto the spoon in plain view.

The Trooper knocked on her window, startling her, and asked what she was doing. She stated “nothing” and was asked to exit the vehicle. She was informed she was being placed into custody and asked the Trooper if “we could pretend this didn’t happen”. She was secured in the cruiser, where she admitted it was heroin. She was transported to the Holden Barracks for booking.

Firearm Recovered After Man Flees on Bike

Troopers from the Troop D Community Action Team were conducting a motor vehicle stop of a motorcycle in New Bedford when the operator attempted to flee. The operator fell off the bike and ran on foot.

After a brief chase, the Troopers apprehended the suspect and placed him into custody. While conducting a pat frisk, they discovered a loaded M&P Smith and Wesson Bodyguard .380 in the suspect’s pocket. Troopers checked the motorcycle's VIN and discovered it had been reported stolen out of New Bedford. A query of the firearm’s serial number revealed it was reported stolen out of New Hampshire. The operator was transported to the Dartmouth Barracks and charged with multiple motor vehicle and firearms charges.
