In the 351 cities and towns, Massachusetts State Troopers use their training and skill to navigate a variety of circumstances that often present significant danger to themselves and others. In an effort to raise greater awareness of their work, the Department periodically shares incident summaries.
Each summary reflects a small portion of the Department’s work to strengthen public safety, collaborate with our partners, and build positive relationships in the communities we serve.

Troopers Arrest Man Brandishing Firearm on North Shore Thoroughfare
Troopers at the Barracks received a road rage report on Route 1 in Revere where a driver brandished a black firearm and pointed it at the victim in traffic.
A short time later, the two drivers had a verbal altercation at a separate location in Saugus where the suspect brandished a firearm again.
Troopers successfully tracked down the vehicle at a residence in Saugus where they responded with the assistance of the Metro Gang Unit. Police located the suspect who possessed a black replica firearm. Troopers arrested the suspect and charged him with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

License Plate Query Leads to Narcotics Seizure
A Trooper on patrol ran a license plate on Route 1 in Saugus. The query revealed that the BMW sedan had an expired inspection sticker prompting the Trooper to initiate a traffic stop.
During the stop, the Trooper noticed a white powder residue near the center consol, removed the driver, searched the vehicle and seized more than 60 pills, 2 syringes, and a small amount of Methamphetamine.

Troopers Support Student in Crisis
Troop B Troopers working in the Western part of the Commonwealth responded to a school where a student made concerning statements and exhibited concerning behavior.
Troopers engaged the young person in conversation and they shared their intent to self-harm. In accordance with their training, Troopers de-escalated the situation and facilitated the student’s transport to a local hospital for evaluation.

Troopers Discover Sex Offender Working without Proper Registration
While on patrol in Worcester, a Trooper queried a vehicle and discovered it was not properly inspected. During a subsequent motor vehicle stop, the driver was found to be a Level 2 sex offender working as a contractor for several years without properly registering that occupation. The Trooper placed the driver under arrest and charged them with failure to register.

Troopers Arrest Impaired Juvenile Driver After Hit-and-Run Crash
Troopers received a report of a hit-and-run crash on Route 2 in Leominster and relayed basic information to area patrols. A short time later, a Trooper saw the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.
As the vehicle came to a stop, the Trooper saw a juvenile operator move a case of beer from the front seat to the rear seat.
When the Trooper approached the car, the juvenile driver fled at a high rate of speed onto Interstate 190. Eventually, the juvenile driver exited the highway, struck a snowbank, and came to a stop at an intersection in Sterling.
Troopers placed the juvenile driver under arrest and determined appropriate charges to include Failure to Stop for Police, OUI- Liquor, Unlicense Operation of a MV, Speeding Exceeding Posted Limit, Negligent Operation, Open Container, Possessing Liquor under 21, Marked Lanes and Failure to Signal. They were subsequently released to their parents without further incident.

Troopers Seize Concealed Firearm from Passenger
During their evening shift patrol, Trooper conducted a motor vehicle stop for various violations. They saw an open container of alcohol and removed the occupants from the vehicle.
When the passenger tried to exit the vehicle, he moved slowly and kept his left hand tucked behind him, in what appeared an attempt to conceal an object. Troopers asked what he was reaching for and he responded, “nothing.”
When the passenger made a sudden movement to reach behind himself, Trooper took control and lifted him out of the car. Troopers subsequently located a firearm on his person as well as an unidentified firearm, a thirty-one (31) round large capacity magazine, and eighteen (18) rounds of ammunition in the vehicle.
Troopers pursued the appropriate firearm offenses when none of the occupants presented the appropriate license to carry.

Complex Arrest Sees Parents Interfere
During a patrol in Brockton, a Trooper stopped a vehicle that repeatedly engaged the brakes and accelerator and emitted a strong odor of marijuana and visible smoke. Upon approach, the Trooper also saw multiple-colored packages consistent with marijuana distribution.
With the driver out of the car, the Trooper located narcotics on his person and placed him under arrest. During a vehicle search, police located additional bags of marijuana and a firearm.
With Brockton Police on scene to assist, the Trooper attempted to place one of the passengers in handcuffs. The passenger attempted to flee, and a struggle ensued. The passenger’s parents subsequently arrived on scene and attempted to interfere with the arrest.
Police subsequently found a second firearm under the driver’s seat, multiple bags of marijuana, and packaging consistent with distribution. In the trunk of the vehicle, police found a stash of burglarious tools.
In total, three men were arrested and charged with multiple narcotics and firearms violations. Police also charged the parents who interfered with several offenses.
